I've Exposed a Hole in Healthcare
There is a gaping hole in our healthcare system and people are getting hurt. “In 2022, 2.3 million (3.2%) children and adolescents aged [17 years or younger] were diagnosed with concussion or brain injury” Click here to read the article. For adults, the CDC found 27% have had a concussion in their lifetime, and that 50.4% were not evaluated for their most recent one!
When you get a concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury, where do you go for help? Many go to their local hospital emergency room. The emergency room can be an important step to ensure you don’t have a life threatening condition from your injury. Unfortunately, once they know you don’t, they send you home - but you still have a brain injury…
Many people also see a Neurologist or Physical Therapist. Providers in both professions are experts in their fields, but they are not usually trained to address concussion comprehensively. There are PTs who specialize in vestibular conditions, and I will refer athletes to them when appropriate. However, they can be hard to find and they only focus on one aspect of your recovery. Concussion recovery demands an approach that focuses on multiple key aspects, not just one.
Seeing the gaping hole yet? All the medical professionals I named are experts in their fields and are essential members of a medical team. But people with concussions fall through this hole all too easily, and that hole can be very hard to climb out of without help. If you’re recovering from a concussion, you need a fully comprehensive approach to address all your needs and draw out the path to healing. You have a huge advantage in your recovery with an Athletic Trainer or other concussion medical expert on your side.
